If you are searching for a place to stay in Exmoor, I highly recommend Tarr Farm Inn. After a recent stay, I understand why it receives so many glowing reviews – it is truly a wonderful place. Nestled at the bottom of a small valley by a tranquil river, the location is incredibly peaceful there is no phone signal, but they offer free Wi-Fi). The building is charming, lovingly decorated, and very cosy. It features a pub, restaurant, and plenty of comfortable indoor and outdoor seating. Lovely background music and ambience. They serve breakfast, lunch and evening meals. There is a wide variety of breakfast options and a three-course main meal in the restaurant is about £45/pp (excluding drinks) but worth every penny. All food was delicious. The staff were very welcoming, friendly, efficient, and helpful from making the booking to check-out. The bedrooms are in a separate purpose-built building, with some on the ground floor and others upstairs. They are decorated in a modern yet cosy style, are very clean and have everything you need – a comfortable bed, ample storage, fridge, drink facilities, modern bathroom with toiletries, plenty of plugs, and a lovely view over the rolling hillside. Despite the hot weather, the room remained cool with large windows you can fully open for fresh air. During the day, it is a popular spot due to the river, walking trails (along the river or up the hills onto the moors), and the pub/restaurant. Parking is limited, but there is a public car park a five-minute walk up the lane/hill (on the right). I parked there temporarily and moved my car to the Inn’s car park when spaces became available in the evening. Tarr Farm Inn is very isolated (no local village or bus route), so you need to drive (use TA22 9QA in your satnav to avoid ending up on the wrong side of the river). But that is part of its charm – it is a perfect getaway! Plus, it is so quiet at night, so you will sleep well and can enjoy a stunning night sky view.

I had dinner here and you know when you really suddenly find a place and absolutely love it but you wonder what it's gonna be like to actually stay there... it was amazing. The rooms and the detail of the historic restoration make it so cozy but it's so friendly. It's chic but not stuffy or pretentious. That's what makes it wonderful. Not just friendly to people but really dog friendly. So you're there in the most stunning setting. It's like being in heaven- you're in wild and wooly, romantic Exmoor where you can sit out on the terrace perched high above a stream and look out. Or go out and walk in the countryside. It's secluded but conveniently located to be able to go down to Exeter or up somewhere else onto the coast. It's just perfect and the restaurant is fantastic and well worth the detour to just to go to the restaurant. I can't wait to come back again and most guests come back year after year...

Everything was great. Very spacious, clean and well kitted out rooms with fresh milk in a fridge and a coffee pod machine as well as ample storage. The bathroom had those bits you might have left at home, like toothbrushes and combs. Excellent shower and extractor fan. The restaurant was cosy and comfortable with a warm atmosphere: very rare in hotels. Breakfast was divine. All staff were cheery and professional. The setting is idylic. I wish we were able to have stayed longer.

Fabulous breakfast, cooked to order. Excellent location right next to Tarr Steps. Lovely touches in bedroom; home cooked biscuits, fridge with jug of real milk for hot drinks, several types of coffee maker; shampoo and conditioner in large refillable dispensers - not connected to wall so easy to use for both shower and bath users. Lovely view from window across fields with horse, pony and pheasants. Nice cosy bar and warm restaurant for cold evenings.

We stayed here as the locatiion is excellent and were delighted that the inn has excellent, friendly staff and they have thought of so many "extras" to ensure the stay was memorable. Our complimentary breakfast was lovely and we ate in the convivial restaurant which serves delicious meals - our thanks to the chef; it was my wifes birthday and we both had a great meal.
